Culture Shot is a short documentary directed and produced by two Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) School of Communication final year students, Khor Zhen Yee and Chew Boon Wai.
The short film has recently been selected as one of the official selections in the Turkey Short Cut Film Festival 2016 representing Malaysia and competing with other films from USA, Iran, India and others.
“It was such a great honour to be able to showcase our work in an international platform. Ultimately, we wish to show the world the true Malaysian spirit that despite all the negativity that haunts our country recently, we still stand together!” Khor Zhen Yee and Chew Boon Wai.
Culture Shot is a Penang Ethno/fusion band that composes Penang tune with traditional instruments such as Er Hu, Lang Tin Tang, Rebana, Gendang, Chinese Gong and Aux percussion. The documentary aims to portray the true social cohesion in Malaysia through the lens of culture and music.
"Though from different races and musical trainings, they are united by their love for music and culture. Music that’s playful in nature as the name suggests and as they put it, “with every song we try our best to serve to you with a taste of Penang” with songs closely tied to old Hokkien Chinese songs.” - Penang World Music Festival 2014
