Juliana Abdul Wahab is a lecturer at the School of Communication, Universiti Sains Malaysia. Her research areas include Media Studies, specifically Television & Radio, Audience Studies, Popular Culture, Gender Studies, Script Writing, Documentary and Public Service Announcement (PSA) Production. Her research mainly focuses on developing and enhancing knowledge in the field of media and communication, particularly in the area of television. Her studies examine how various discourses operate in the society and seeks to understand the dynamics of ideologies in maintaining existing social order. In addition, her study also investigates how audiences interpret and construct meanings from their exposures to media content. Many of her works are published in book, book chapters, journal articles (both indexed and non-indexed) and conferences proceedings. Her current research project examine audiences’ interpretations of health and wellness messages and perceptions on body image. Besides research, she is also involved in producing creative audio-visual production. She has worked with the National Cancer Society, Penang Branch, Occupational Theraphy Unit, General Hospital (Penang), Clinical Research Center, General Hospital (Penang), Intel Malaysia, Sdn. Bhd. and Center for Drug Research, USM and Center for Research on Women & Gender (KANITA), USM. The outcome of the projects contribute towards improving the quality of life of the patients, single mothers and the society at large. Within the academic setting she is actively involved as an internal and external examiners for Masters and Ph.D theses, grant assessor, manuscript&journal article reviewer and sits on the editorial board of various international journals. At the national level, she serves as a member of the curriculum committee and external examiner for academic programmes in the field of Media and Communication Studies by several leading private institutions in Malaysia. She was also a Project co-ordinator for Malaysia Pre and Post Merdeka, Fullbright Hays Scholars, organised by Malaysia-American Commision on Educational Exchange (MACEE) and Project co-ordinator, for the Campus Forum, in colloboration with Radio Singapore International. At the international level, she was a Visiting Fellow at the International Institute for Asian Studies, Leiden, Netherlands during her sabbatical leave in 2010. She was also a Visiting Lecturer to the Department of Media Studies, at Lund University, Sweden, hosted by Professor Peter Dahglren. In 2011 she was invited by Leiden University to be part of a consortium of researchers participating in the brainstorming session and grant application for funding from the European Union for research on South East Asia. From time to time she has been actively involved as a moderator, speaker for panel sessions and keynote speaker at international conferences.
