We are pleased to announce the 2nd International Conference on Media, Communication and Culture (ICMCC2015) with the theme ONE MESSAGE, MULTIPLE PLATFORMS. The conference will be held in Penang, at the Vistana Hotel from the 30th November to 2nd December, 2015.
The conference will be organized by the SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION, UNIVERSITI SAINS MALAYSIA (USM) in cooperation with the COMMUNICATION DEPARTMENT, UNIVERSITAS MUHAMMADIYAH YOGYAKARTA (UMY) and UNIVERSITAS MERCU BUANA, JAKARTA (UMB). This is the 2nd collaboration between USM and UMY.
Donation to Students Affected by Flood Disaster
12 students from the School of Communication affected by the recent flood disaster were provided with some monetary contribution from the staffs and students of the school. The students affected were from Machang, Kuala Kerai, Pasir Mas, Gua Musang, Wakaf Baru, Kubang Kerian, Dungun and Kota Baru. Persatuan Komunikasi (PERKOM) also held a collection among students and families of students. A total of RM1,500 was collected in an effort to assist those who are affected by the disaster. A brief ceremony to present the cash donation by the Dean of the school, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jamilah Hj Ahmad was held on January 21st, 2015. The ceremony was also attended by the School’s EXCO members, Dr. Juliana Abdul Wahab, Dr. Shuhaida Md Noor, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azman Azwan Azmawati and Dr. Nik Norma Nik Hasan.
Communication in Action 2014
The School of Communication has recently organized a university-community engagement workshop at Balai Media USM, entitled Competent Communication 2014 (Communication in Action). The one-day workshop was funded by Division of Industry and Community Network (BJIM) and supported by representatives of Batu Uban, Bayan Baru UMNO Youth and also staffs of the School of Communication through in kind donations.
The workshop aimed to create awareness among youths of low to lower middle income families in 3 locations, namely Gelugor, Bayan Baru and Balik Pulau. This group is targeted because they are identified as the youths of the bottom billions community.
139 Communication Students Graduated at USM’s 50th Convocation
A total of 139 Communication students received their scrolls at USM’s golden jubilee convocation ceremony held on the 5th to 9th November 2014.
97 graduated with Bachelor degrees and 42 were awarded postgraduate degrees. From the number of 97 undergraduates, 41 majored in Film & Broadcasting, 21 in Journalism and 35 in Persuasive Communication.
Among the 42 postgraduates, four received their Degree in Philosophy (Ph.D), 26 received their Master’s degrees majoring in Integrated Marketing Communication, seven in Master of Communication, three in Master of Screen Studies and two in Master of Science & Environmental Journalism.
The postgraduate scrolls were awarded on the 6th of November, while the undergraduates received their scrolls on 9th of November. All sessions were held at Dewan Tuanku Syed Putra, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang.
Meanwhile, a third year Journalism student, Michele Ng Heng Kim received an Honorary Award for overall best Journalism student for the academic year 2013.
