A meaningful collaboration between Universiti Malaya (UM) and School of Communication, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) through Suara Bukit: Mini Documentary Festival

USM, 26 April 2026-The project began with the workshop Media & Nature: Visual Narratives for Sustainability that was held in December 2025, where students were then tasked with producing a mini documentary as part of the festival competition. Led by Dr. Hafiz, Dr. Umar and team from the Department of Media and Communication Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, UM, our students were nurtured with storytelling and production skills in crafting meaningful visual stories inspired by the theme Nature, People & Our Story, set against the iconic landscape of Penang Hill. Last Sunday, the festival featured a showcase of these mini documentaries, followed by an award presentation to the winners of the top three best documentaries. More than a celebration of creativity, the programme highlighted the power of storytelling in fostering community connection and a shared commitment towards environmental sustainability. Congratulations to all of the winners!

POWERFUL USM ROLE OF YOUTH IN DIGITAL STORYTELLING, NATURAL SUSTAINABILITY AND CULTURAL HERITAGE

PENANG, 25 April 2026 – The University of Science Malaysia (USM) continues to strengthen its commitment in empowering the younger generation through the workshop “Capture the Future: Global Youth Storytelling Initiative for People and Culture” which takes place on 25 and 26 April 2026 at USM, Penang. This program is jointly organized by the Malaysia National Commission for UNESCO, Bukit Bendera Corporation and USM, with the support of UNESCO and Vivo, to lift digital storytelling as an important medium in raising awareness of nature sustainability, biodiversity and cultural heritage preservation. Through the involvement of the Center for Communication Studies, USM continues to equip students with media literacy, creative skills and cultural sensitivity to be able to become ethical, factual and responsible narrative shapers in today's digital landscape. This initiative also reflects the role of USM in the global sustainability agenda, including the contribution to the recognition of the Bukit Bendera Biosphere Reserve as well as the continuation of USM as the holder of the UNESCO Chair in the field of Ecohydraulics until 2028. Through this strategic partnership, USM remains committed to building a young generation that is media literate, culturally and concerned about the future of the environment and humanity. #USM #UniversitiSainsMalaysia #UNESCO #BukitBendera #DigitalStorytelling #Sustainability #WarisanBudaya #Biodiversiti #YouthEmpowerment
