COMM@LiT 2026 Advances Value-Based Education and Sustainable Development Through Community-Engaged Learning

6 June 2026 | Pusat Transit Harapan Pulau Pinang

The School of Communication, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), successfully concluded Phase Two of COMM@Love in Transit 2026 (COMM@LiT 2026), reaffirming the University's commitment to Value-Based Education (VBE), Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), and University Social Responsibility (USR) through meaningful community engagement.

Organised by 52 second-year students enrolled in the YBP230 Corporate Social Responsibility course under the guidance of Professor Dr Jamilah Hj Ahmad, the initiative exemplifies how academic knowledge can be translated into real-world solutions through the Service-Learning Malaysia–University for Society (SULAM-USM) approach.

The program engaged more than 80 residents through activities promoting health literacy, environmental awareness, emotional well-being and social inclusion, supporting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

COMM@LiT 2026 demonstrates the role of higher education institutions in advancing sustainable development by fostering mutually beneficial partnerships between universities and communities while preparing future communication professionals to become responsible, empathic and socially conscious leaders.

14 May (Thursday). Open University & Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM SHAPE)
The benchmarking visits to Open University Malaysia and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM SHAPE) have been completed as part of our preparation for the upcoming program.
At OUM, we were warmly welcomed by the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences & Humanities, Associate Professor Dr. Hamidah Mat, and the team, while at UKM SHAPE, we were greeted by the Project Manager, Puan Nurziyanti Mohamad Khan, and the team. Our sincere appreciation to both institutions for their openness and valuable sharing.
The sessions provided important insights into ODL pedagogy and how programs are managed and sustained in practice, particularly in terms of course operations, lecturer responsibilities, student engagement, assessment timelines, and quality assurance aligned with MQA and COPPA requirements.
These benchmarking exercises will inform the final preparation of our program.
The Master of Communication in Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) in ODL mode will soon be offered! Wait for it.

Suara Bukit Mini Festival Nature & Community Documentary

26 April (Friday). DKE, Universiti Sains Malaysia

A meaningful collaboration between Universiti Malaya (UM) and School of Communication, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) through Suara Bukit: Mini Documentary Festival, held on 26 April 2026.

The project began with the workshop Media & Nature: Visual Narratives for Sustainability that was held in December 2025, where students were then tasked with producing a mini documentary as part of the festival competition. Led by Dr. Hafiz, Dr. Umar and team from the Department of Media and Communication Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, UM, our students were nurtured with storytelling and production skills in crafting meaningful visual stories inspired by the theme Nature, People & Our Story, set against the iconic landscape of Penang Hill.

Last Sunday, the festival featured a showcase of these mini documentaries, followed by an award presentation to the winners of the top three best documentaries. More than a celebration of creativity, the programme highlighted the power of storytelling in fostering community connection and a shared commitment towards environmental sustainability.
Congratulations to all of the winners!
