The School of Communication, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), in collaboration with VIT-AP University, Andhra Pradesh, India, conducted the programme “Strengthening Digital Competencies and Cyber Awareness: Community Project for Secondary School Students in Andhra Pradesh, India” from 31 July to 10 August 2026 under the Mobility Matching Fund (MOMAF) 2026. Led by Dr. Rani Ann Balaraman, a lecturer at the School of Communication, the project involved eight students from the School of Communication as facilitators. The initiative provided them with an opportunity to apply their communication knowledge and skills in a community-based and international setting.

The community project was conducted at three schools: Zilla Parishad High School (ZPHS), Tenali; Zilla Parishad High School (ZPHS), Penumaka; and ZPHS International Model School, with a total of 150 secondary school students taking part. The activities focused on digital literacy and cyber awareness, covering online safety, personal data protection, identifying false information, responsible social media use, cyberbullying, and online scams. Interactive activities were used to help participants understand these issues and apply their knowledge to everyday situations.

The project provided USM students with valuable experience in conducting community-based educational activities in an international setting. Their role as facilitators enabled them to apply and strengthen their communication, leadership, and teamwork skills in a cross-cultural environment. The collaboration with VIT-AP University also strengthened academic ties between Malaysia and India while supporting USM’s commitment to expanding the impact of education and community engagement internationally.

The program engaged more than 80 residents through activities promoting health literacy, environmental awareness, emotional well-being and social inclusion, supporting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

COMM@LiT 2026 demonstrates the role of higher education institutions in advancing sustainable development by fostering mutually beneficial partnerships between universities and communities while preparing future communication professionals to become responsible, empathic and socially conscious leaders.
